UCC Soccer: Riverhawks’ streak ends with 3-2 loss at Chemeketa
SALEM — The Umpqua Riverhawks women’s soccer team had its streak of five straight games without a loss come to an end on Wednesday at Chemeketa Community College.
The Chemeketa Storm scored in the closing minutes of a South Region game to beat the Riverhawks 3-2 in Salem. It was Umpqua’s first loss in over three weeks.
The teams traded goals throughout the contest. Umpqua (5-4-1, 5-2-1 South Region) got on the board when Mya Stone scored her 10th goal of the season in the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Stone, UCC’s all-time leading scorer, now ranks seventh amongst NWAC goal-scorers.
Emorie Loewen scored her second goal of the game on an assist from Kenya Bautista to give Chemeketa (8-2-1, 6-1-1) a 2-1 lead at halftime.
UCC’s McKenzee West knotted up the score in the second half with a goal in the 70th minute on an assist from Siulose Jones, but the Storm netted the game-winner in the 89th minute on a goal by Johanna Diaz.
The loss gave Chemeketa sole possession of second place in the South Region standings. Umpqua fell to third.
Up next, the UCC women will host the Lane Titans at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
