Prep Cross Country: Roseburg boys win Fugate Farms Invite team title

BANDON — The Roseburg Indians boys’ cross country team had five runners place in the top 10 to claim the team title at the Fugate Farms Invite Saturday.

Ethan Smith covered the 5,000 meter course in a personal best time of 16 minutes, 46.36 seconds, which was good for a second place finish in the individual standings. Bandon’s Beckett Pahls finished first in a time of 16 minutes, 1.73 seconds.

Tayten Keplinger (6th, 17:55.20), Jamison Heath (7th, 18:21.71), Lucas Bernier (8th, 18:24.01) and Brayden Powell (9th, 18:30.45) also had top 10 finishes for the Indians.

Roseburg beat out Bandon for the boys’ team title. Sutherlin finished fifth in the team scores and Glendale was sixth.

Briana Smith and Paige Heacock led the Roseburg girls with top 10 finishes. Smith ran the course in 22 minutes, 27:37 seconds to finish eighth and Heacock placed 10th in a time of 22 minutes, 47.90 seconds.

Days Creek freshman Jolee Woody placed second in the girls’ race with a time of 19 minutes, 44.09 seconds.

Up next, the Roseburg cross country team will host the Umpqua Opener on Wednesday at Stewart Park in Roseburg.
