College Soccer: Umpqua women start league play with 2-0 win over Chemeketa

SUTHERLIN — The Umpqua Riverhawks women’s soccer team started out league play with a big win over the defending South Region champs on Wednesday at Sutherlin High School.

UCC scored a pair of first half goals and held on to shutout Chemeketa 2-0 for its first win of the season.

Mya Stone scored in the 14th minute to get Umpqua (1-2, 1-0 South Region) on the board and added another goal in the 21st minute. Stone has now scored three of UCC’s four goals this season.

Chemeketa (2-2, 0-1) was stonewalled by UCC goalkeepers Kayden Twichell and Emersyn Gutierrez. They combined to make 10 saves in net.

Up next, the Riverhawks will head to Eugene to face the Lane Titans at 6 p.m. Saturday.
