Legion Baseball: Docs fall 2-1 in pitcher’s duel with Moundtime

CORVALLIS — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s and Moundtime (Portland) were locked in a tight battle, but Moundtime edged out the Docs for a 2-1 victory to begin play in the 49th Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament at Hansen Stadium at Taylor Field.
Moundtime’s Brandon Yee got the edge over Roseburg’s Ty Hellenthal. Both hurlers pitched all seven innings and kept the opposing batters off balance.
Yee, a lefty from Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton, scattered seven hits and allowed one unearned run with three strikeouts and one walk. He managed to pitch around trouble and got the Docs to leave five runners stranded in scoring position.
Hellenthal got his third spot start with the Docs and allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts. He suffered his first loss for the Docs this summer.
Vincent Worley did the damage for Moundtime (9-5). The nine-hitter in the lineup came through with a pair of two-out singles to score runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Worley’s hits gave Moundtime the lead on both occasions.
Roseburg (9-7) answered quickly after falling behind 1-0 in the fifth. Danner Wertz reached on an error and scored on a single by Amos Bowers.
Teagan Sprague reached base in the seventh with the Docs trailing 2-1 and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Bowers. Sprague was left stranded at second as Yee got Paxton Burke and Regan Soper to fly out and end the game.
Burke was 2-for-4 in the game and Sprague was 2-for-3.
Hudson McIntyre joined Worley as the only Moundtime players with two hits.
The Docs continue play in the Mickey Riley Star Spangled Tournament at 10 a.m. Friday against the Hillsboro Baseballism Wet Sox.
