Prep Golf: Roseburg girls finish 3rd at SWC district tournament, qualify for Regionals

BANDON — The Roseburg Indians girls’ golf team finished third in the Southwest Conference district tournament on Tuesday at Bandon Crossings and will advance as a team to the Class 6A Special District 3 Regional tournament next week for a chance to earn a spot in the state tournament later this month.
The RHS girls improved by 45 strokes as a team on Day 2 of the tournament and sophomore Lana Silvestri shot the only round under par as she led the way with a first place finish on the individual leaderboard.
“(I) was happy to not only see the scores drop a little bit, but the girls’ attitudes all week were great. They were ready to battle,” Roseburg coach Devin Caylor said. “We had a lot more breaks go our way (on Tuesday). The girls battled on the back-nine.”
Silvestri shot 84 in the first round Monday on the par 72 course. She wasn’t able to card a single birdie, but came out and sank seven birdies in the second round on Tuesday to finish 2-under for the day. Her two-day score of 154 was 23 strokes better than second place finishers Waka Tsukamoto from South Eugene and Katie Myers from Sheldon.
“(Silvestri) was giving herself opportunities (on Day 1), the putter just wasn’t very hot,” Caylor said. “She had a little bit more swagger to her (on Day 2). You could see that she had a little bit more confidence and she wanted to get after it. She wasn’t happy with her (first) round, so instead of hanging her head she was like ‘I’m going to get it today.'”
Irelyn Weaver (216), Raeleigh Traviss (225) and Mylie Ray (230) all finished in the top 15 for the Indians.
Sheldon claimed the district title by two strokes over Grants Pass and punched its ticket to the Class 6A state tournament May 18-19 at OGA Golf Course in Woodburn.
The one-day Regional tournament tees off on Tuesday at Eagle Point Golf Club. Roseburg will compete against Grants Pass, North Medford and South Salem for a top two finish to earn a spot as a team in the state tournament. The top two individuals not on a state qualifying team will also earn a berth in the state tournament.
Caylor was confident in his team’s chances of performing well at the Regional tournament.
“We’re going back to a course that we know. We all played it early this year during a tournament,” Caylor said. “We were a bit rusty when we went down there… but it was good for the girls to go see the course, so it’s not like they’re going to go to this regional course not knowing what they were expecting.”
The Roseburg boys were led by senior Harrison Scott and junior Graham Fisk, who both tied for 22nd in the individual standings. They did not qualify for the Regional tournament.
As a team, Roseburg finished 7th with a score of 773. Grants Pass took the team title with a combined score of 626 over the two days. The Cavemen were led by Carson Krauss who was 5-under (139) for the 36-hole tourney and placed first individually.
