College Baseball: Pitching dominates as UCC and Lane split a doubleheader

EUGENE — Runs were hard to come by as pitching dominated a crucial doubleheader between Umpqua and Lane on Wednesday at Lane Community College.
The Riverhawks led all the way in a 2-1 victory to start a crucial South Region twin bill and the Titans rallied to win 1-0 in the nightcap.
With the results, Lane (32-16, 22-12 South Region) remains one-game ahead of Umpqua (25-15, 21-13) for second place in the South Region standings with two games left to go.
UCC will need to sweep Saturday’s regular season finale doubleheader to move ahead of LCC. The second place team hosts a three-team Super Regional playoff, while third place goes on the road.
Beau Ramsey and Joey Garboden out-dueled Griffin Scott and Logan Anzellotti in Game 1. Both pitching staffs allowed just three hits and minimized traffic on the bases.
Ramsey earned his ninth win of the season after allowing just one run over eight innings. The freshman surrendered just three hits, but walked six and hit a batter. Lane’s lone run came in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk by Ramsey.
Miller took over in the ninth and had to work around some trouble after he hit the first batter he faced. A sacrifice bunt by Lane put the game-tying run at second base with one out, but the Titans were caught trying to steal third for the second out.
Quinton Olson drew a walk to again get the game-tying run on base, but Miller slammed the door shut with a strikeout against Roseburg-native Austin Takahashi to end the game.
Caden Kuhnert and Aidan Birchard drove in runs for Umpqua with ground outs in the third and fifth innings, respectively.
Tyler Miller tossed a complete-game for the Riverhawks in Game 2, but didn’t get the runs needed to earn a victory. The freshman only allowed one run on five hits over eight innings.
The difference in the game came in the third inning. Miller issued a leadoff walk — his only base on balls in the game — and two batters later Donnie Morgan delivered a one-out RBI single.
Lucas Geren and Sam Wilson scattered five hits over the nine-inning shutout for Lane. Geren earned the win after 6 2/3 innings where he allowed four hits, two walks and struck out five. Wilson picked up a save by allowing one hit over 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
