College Sports: North Douglas grad Ray Gerrard sets WOU school record
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Ray Gerrard, a North Douglas High School graduate, set a new school record in the discus for Western Oregon University on Thursday at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State University.
Gerrard had a throw of 177 feet, 9 inches to finish third in the men’s section A competition. Traves Smikle, an unattached athlete who has competed for Jamaica in the Olympics, won the event with a meet-record throw of 215 feet, 8 inches.
Gerrard’s throw broke Doyle Kenady’s Western Oregon record of 175 feet, 8 inches set in 1971. It was Gerrard’s best throw since he won the 2023 Class 1A state championship as a senior at North Douglas.
