A couple of two-out hits for the Jesuit Crusaders proved to be the difference in a 4-1 win over the Roseburg Indians on Monday at Champion Car Wash Field.

Ryder Listy dropped a two-out double just inside the chalk line in left field to score a pair of runs for Jesuit (2-1) in the first inning. Jake Rolling had a two-out triple in the seventh that helped push the Crusaders out to a 4-1 lead.

“Bottom line, they had a couple of two-out hits with runners on that led to their four runs and we had the chances to have two-out hits with runners on and we didn’t come through with those today,” Roseburg coach Troy Thompson said.

Sandwiched in between the first and last inning were five innings of shutout pitching by Roseburg’s Danner Wertz. The sophomore had seven strikeouts with two walks and one hit batter over a total of 6 2/3 innings.

Roseburg (2-1) was limited at the plate by Jesuit’s Chase Kelly. The left-handed junior had eight strikeouts over six innings of work. He gave up just four hits, walked one and hit one batter.

The Indians scored their lone run in the third inning to draw within 2-1. Brady Popken hit a leadoff double down the right field line and later scored on a one-out single by Paxton Burke.

“Defensively and on the mound we did an outstanding job,” Thompson said. “But offensively, we’ve got to be better at the plate against a quality arm like we saw today.”

Roseburg had its chance to make the game interesting in the seventh. Christian Korba walked and Nick Ruiz singled to bring the game-tying run to the plate against reliever Nico Fernandez.

Dylan Shanks put down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position, but Mason Young popped out to shallow center field for the second out and Burke flew out to the third baseman to end the game.

“(We had) some real opportunities there with runners on,” Thompson said. “We’d like to get a hit out of a couple of guys there, but it just didn’t happen for us, but we played ourselves into that position, so that was good to see us come back.”

Roseburg and Jesuit square off again at noon Tuesday at Champion Car Wash Field.
