Prep Baseball: Roseburg’s Young caps 8-7 comeback victory over Wells

Despite leading by half a dozen early, the Roseburg Indians needed to rally late for an 8-7 walk off win over the Ida B. Wells Guardians in a nonleague game Thursday at Champion Car Wash Field.

The Guardians trailed 6-2 going to the seventh inning and stormed back with five runs for their first lead of the game.
Roseburg (2-0) loaded the bases in the home half of the seventh and tied the game on a walk by Nick Ruiz. One batter later, Mason Young smacked a ball up the middle to score the game-winning run.
“Great job by Mason Young to come up with their infield in, and an extra infielder in, to hit a ground ball that got the job done,” Roseburg coach Troy Thompson said. “That’s what we talk about all the time, come through when you have the opportunity and he came through for us in a big way there.”
Young finished the game 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI’s. Ruiz also had two RBI’s. Paxton Burke and Ryland Glasser also drove in runs for the Tribe.
The Indians built a 6-0 lead over the first three innings against Wells (0-2).
Christian Korba drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to put RHS ahead 1-0.
Roseburg added five runs in the third inning. Young drove in his first run with a bases-loaded single. Glasser followed with a bloop single to shallow center field. Burke tacked on the final run with a fielder’s choice.
The Indians seemed to be rolling, but a solo home run by Jimmy Tilles to lead off the fifth inning gave the Guardians some momentum. Grae Wilson hit a two-out single to draw Wells within 6-2.
The Guardians had 11 hitters come to the plate in the seventh inning as they dug out of that 4-run hole. Jack Burnham tied the game with a one-out single and Tilles plated a run with a bases-loaded walk to put Wells ahead 7-6.
Fletcher Coleman started on the mound for Roseburg and pitched well over four innings. He didn’t allow a hit until Tilles’ home run in the fifth. He wound up allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
“Great job (by Coleman). That’s all we can ask for in his start,” Thompson said. “We wanted to get him some innings, because he hasn’t had a lot.”
Burke took the mound with one out in the seventh and struck out back-to-back hitters to get the Indians out of the jam. He earned the win.
Up next, Roseburg will host Jesuit for a nonleague game at 3 p.m. Monday.
