Prep Boys Basketball: Roseburg pushes Sheldon to brink, falls 90-79 in OT

EUGENE — The Roseburg Indians gave the Sheldon Irish all they could handle and nearly upset the defending Southwest Conference champions, but the Irish prevailed 90-79 in overtime Friday night at Rayborn Gymnasium.
Harrison Scott made three free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining in regulation to cap off Roseburg’s second half rally and force the game into overtime tied at 75.
Sheldon (17-7, 9-2 SWC) found its rhythm in the extra session and went on a 10-0 run to push through the finish line to secure the win.
Roseburg coach Brett Nixon felt the Indians left it all on the floor and just ran out of gas in OT.
“I couldn’t be happier right now,” Nixon said. “The effort. The energy. We played our game and we fumbled, we stumbled, we made some mistakes but still hung right in there.”
The Indians overcame a sluggish end to the first half. Roseburg (0-23, 0-11) hung close with Sheldon through the first eight minutes and the game was tied 20-20 going to the second quarter.
The Irish stretched its lead to 12 points late in the half, but the Indians rallied to go into the locker room down 47-37.
Gannon Egbert helped the Indians whittle away at the deficit. He scored five of his 13 points in the third quarter as the Tribe drew within 57-49 going into the fourth quarter.
Tristen Frable and Scott both scored eight points in the fourth and Roseburg outscored Sheldon 26-18 to tie the game. Scott was perfect at the free throw line for the game and made five from the stripe in the final period, including the free throws that sent the game to OT.
“We would have won more games if we played like we did tonight,” Nixon said. “That’s what’s crazy. And I’ve know they’ve had it in them. It’s a little too far, too late, but I think they’re finally starting to buy in.”
Kai Holmes had a game-high 39 points to lead Sheldon, including seven in overtime. Geno Marzano added 21 for the Irish.
Frable finished with a career-high 23 points for Roseburg. He was 4-for-5 at the free throw line and made five 3-point shots.
The Indians had five players finish in double figures. Scott chipped in 16 points, Egbert had 13, Jaden Kemmerle had 11 and Preston Sprague had 10 before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Roseburg will look to build off the momentum in the season finale at home against South Eugene at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
