UCC Hoops: Riverhawks split President’s Day games at Portland
PORTLAND — The Umpqua Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams spent the President’s Day holiday in the Rose City for NWAC South Region games against the Portland Panthers Monday.
The Umpqua women (19-7, 10-3 South Region) handed the Portland Panthers a 78-55 defeat. The Riverhawks pulled away with a 19-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Giselle Muffett played 40 minutes and finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds. Rebekah Beltran added 22 points in 38 minutes for the Riverhawks.
The Umpqua men (22-4, 10-3) fell to Portland 83-76.
UCC built a five-point lead at halftime, but saw it crumble in the second half as the Panthers caught fire and shot 48% from the field and went 10-for-10 at the free throw line. The Riverhawks were just 1-for-5 at the line and shot 32% after the break.
Mikey Lloyd led UCC with 24 points and 11 assists.
The Riverhawks still hold a slim lead for first place in the South Region standings.
Up next, the UCC men and women will visit the Southwestern Oregon Lakers on Wednesday.
