Prep Boys Basketball: First half run leads South Eugene to 83-59 win over Roseburg
EUGENE — A five minute stretch of game play turned the tables on Roseburg’s hopes of sticking with the South Eugene Axe in an 83-59 Southwest Conference loss Friday at the Purple Pit.
South Eugene (10-9, 4-2 SWC) went on a 13-0 run from the tail end of the first quarter through the early portion of the second period to build a 12-point lead, which proved to be enough of a cushion to hold off the Indians.
Roseburg (0-18, 0-6) took a 12-11 lead over the Axe on a 19-foot jumper by Tristen Frable with 3:29 left to play in the opening frame. South Eugene answered with an 8-0 run to close out the period.
The Axe kept the run going in the second quarter and built a 24-12 advantage on a 3-point shot from Elijah Gabriel with 6:46 left to go in the half.
A 3-pointer by Jaden Kemmerle moments later stopped the run by South, but the Indians went into the locker room down 43-26 at the half and never conjured up a comeback.
Calvin Yoder led four South Eugene in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Gabriel added 14 points while Cameron Perry and Levi Cohen both contributed 13.
Harrison Scott was 4-for-4 at the free throw line and led Roseburg with 15 points. Tristen Frable had 10 points for the Indians, while Kemmerle and Preston Sprague added nine points each.
Roseburg begins the second half of the Southwest Conference season at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Grants Pass.
