UCC basketball sweeps Lane, moves up South Region standings
WINCHESTER — The Umpqua Community College basketball teams took care of business against the Lane Titans in a South Region matchup Wednesday night at the UCC gym.
The Umpqua women topped the Lane Titans 85-78 in a top-10 matchup and took sole possession of second place in the South Region standings.
The No. 10-ranked Riverhawks never trailed in the contest and pulled ahead by as much as 22 points in the second quarter. No. 2 Lane rallied to within four points in the third quarter, but Umpqua (16-5, 7-1 South Region) was able to regain its composure and stretch the lead back out.
Giselle Muffett had a game-high 30 points for the Riverhawks. She drained three of the seven 3-pointers made by UCC. Kaelyn Shoemaker added another double-double to her season total with 14 points and 26 rebounds.
The win stretched UCC’s winning streak to seven games.
The Umpqua men beat Lane 86-68 for their fourth consecutive win. The victory also moved the Riverhawks into a tie for first place in the league standings.
Jackson Taylor sank five 3-pointers and led UCC (19-2, 7-1 South Region) with 19 points. Caden Hunter had a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 12 boards.
The Riverhawks look to keep things rolling as they head to Mt. Hood for league games on Saturday in Gresham.
