Prep Boys Basketball: Short-handed Roseburg falls to South Medford, 94-62

MEDFORD — A short-handed Roseburg boys basketball team took some swings early, but the South Medford Panthers had the depth and stamina to outlast the Indians for a 94-62 win in a Southwest Conference game Tuesday night at South Medford High School.
The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth through the first quarter and the game was tight to start the second period, but the Panthers finished the half on a 20-8 run to begin to pull away.
South Medford (13-6, 5-1 SWC) started the second half on a 12-2 run and the rout was on.
“Defintiely went from that first five going as hard as they could. A lot of energy. That first quarter was great. Even the second, made some little mental mistakes, but then it kind of showed in the second half that we were kind of gassed,” Roseburg coach Brett Nixon said. “(We) didn’t have a lot of bench depth, so we used what we could and tried to hang in there, but they were just too much for us in the second half.”
Roseburg (0-17, 0-5) was playing without senior Marcus Lobo and junior Gavin Michael. Senior Jaron Leeworthy has been out since the second game of the season.
The Indians played tough defense and hit the glass hard in the first quarter to keep pace with the Panthers, who led 16-13 after the first eight minutes.
Harrison Scott was fouled on a 3-point attempt and sank three free throws to get the Indians within 27-25 with about five minutes left to go in the first half, but the Panthers responded with a quick 10-0 run over the next two minutes and went into the locker room with a comfortable 47-33 advantage.
Scott sank three 3-point shots and was 6-for-6 at the free throw line to score a game-high 21 points. Tristen Frable scored 13 of his career-high 19 points in the second half for the Indians.
South Medford had six players in double figures, led by Pearce Atchley with 15 points.
Roseburg will visit the Purple Pit in Eugene for a showdown with the South Eugene Axe at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
