Prep Girls Basketball: 3-point barrage leads Roseburg to 58-52 win over Eagle Point
The Roseburg girls basketball team drained 14 3-point shots and held off a comeback rally by Eagle Point to earn a 58-52 win in a nonconference game Monday at Robertson Memorial Gymnasium.
Senior Kennedi Smith dropped eight 3-pointers through the nylon for a game-high 26 points. Kyleigh Miller had four makes from behind the arc and added 16 points for the Tribe.
“This is definitely my best game,” Smith said, but she didn’t take much of the credit.
“It’s all because of my teammates. They got me the passes I needed to make those shots. So it was really all on my team,” Smith said.
Smith and Kyleigh Miller combined for four 3-pointers in the first quarter to help Roseburg (6-4) build a 10-point lead.
Class 5A Eagle Point (5-5) clamped down on defense and forced the 6A Indians into a number of sloppy turnovers in the second quarter. The Eagles rallied to get within 28-24 by halftime.
E.P. started the second half on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 28-all near the midway point of the third quarter, but back-to-back long balls by Smith and Kyleigh Miller helped spark the Tribe to finish the period on a 12-5 run.
Smith hit her final two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help keep the Indians just ahead of Eagle Point. The Eagles chipped the lead down to 43-41 with about five minutes to play, but again it was the 3-ball that bailed out the Tribe.
Gabby Johnson snatched a steal and fed Kyleigh Miller for a 3-point goal to give Roseburg a 54-48 lead with about a minute left to play. The Indians went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the closing minutes to secure the win.
Smith credited hard work in practices recently that helped lead to a resilient effort against the Eagles.
“I feel like it was our best with our chemistry of our team, too,” Smith said. “So it really helped me get in my groove because of them and their passing and just being great teammates all around.”
Emary Haning and Kolbie Ledbetter both had 14 points to lead Eagle Point (2-8).
“We haven’t beaten Eagle Point in a long time, so this is a really good win for us and really set us up good to go into league with confidence into each other,” Smith said.
The Indians have two more nonleague games before starting Southwest Conference play on Jan. 19 at Willamette. Roseburg faces Reynolds at 3 p.m. Friday in Troutdale.
