UCC plans ceremony to honor softball team
Umpqua Community College will hold a moment of silence for the UCC softball team between games of a Riverhawks baseball doubleheader at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday at Champion Car Wash Field in Roseburg.
The Umpqua softball team suffered a horrific tragedy when the team bus was struck head-on by an alleged impaired driver on April 18. The team was returning from games played at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.
The crash killed head coach Jami Strinz and student-athlete Kiley Jones, injured numerous other players and staff and deeply impacted the first-year program.
The college is inviting the local community to Thursday’s baseball games to show support for the softball team and remember Strinz and Jones with a moment of silence. Admission to the games is free. Game 1 of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
The UCC Foundation has also set up the UCC Softball Support Fund for those lives lost and affected by the tragedy. Donations can be made to the fund HERE.
