Roseburg baseball slugs its way past South Eugene in SWC doubleheader

EUGENE — The baseball was flying around the park on a mostly sunny afternoon at South Eugene High School on Saturday.

The No. 7 Roseburg Indians blasted three home runs and had 11 extra base hits total in a sweep of the South Eugene Axe in a Southwest Conference doubleheader. RHS won 7-1 in the opener and ran away with a 13-3 win in the nightcap.

Rylee Cheney went the distance in Game 1 and got plenty of run support. He allowed six hits and two walks over seven innings and struck out four.

The junior was working from ahead early on as the Indians scored twice in the second inning. Luke Robbins led off the frame with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Dane St. Clair drove in another run with a two-out single.

Roseburg’s Jake Johnson and Luke Robbins hit back-to-back doubles in the third inning to make it 3-0.

South Eugene (2-12, 0-8 SWC) got on the board in the fourth inning after a double by Liam Donlon, but the Indians quickly responded with three runs in the fifth to stretch the game out. Cal Robbins hit a solo homer followed by RBI singles from Danner Wertz and Fletcher Coleman.

Cal Robbins tacked on another RBI with a double in the sixth inning.

Game 2 featured a lot more offense in support of starting pitcher Danner Wertz. The freshman pitched all five innings of a mercy rule victory, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and seven punchouts.

Roseburg (9-4, 5-2) had 10 hits, four of them for extra bases.

The Indians rolled to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Cal Robbins drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Luke Robbins had two RBI’s on a double, Danner Wertz singled in a run and the Tribe got runs on an error and a ground out.

Cal Robbins hit his second solo home run of the day to lead off the second inning and give Roseburg a 7-0 advantage.

South Eugene scored three runs in the third inning on a bases loaded double by Brendan Van Ryzin, but Roseburg retaliated with three runs of its own in the fourth.

The Indians made it a 10-run game on a three-run home run by St. Clair in the fifth.

Roseburg had 22 hits between the two games. Cal Robbins was 4-for-6 with two doubles and two home runs. Luke Robbins was 3-for-7 with three doubles. St. Clair was 5-for-8 with a double, triple and a home run. Wertz was 3-for-6 with three RBI’s. Paxton Burke was also 3-for-6.

Roseburg plays another conference game at Grants Pass at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
