Wrestling: Sutherlin, Oakland lead local grapplers at weekend tourneys

JUNCTION CITY — A number of local wrestlers reached the championship bout at the Junction City Invitational on Saturday.

Sutherlin’s Dane Strunk and Dane Flora both won individual titles to lead the Bulldogs to a fifth place overall finish. Strunk won by fall in the 120 pound title match, while Flora earned a 4-0 decision in the 165 pound final.

Cameron King (132 pounds), Beau Olsen (190) and Tauj Flora (215) all had runner-up finishes in the tourney.

Douglas placed seventh as a team and had two individual champs. Peyton Wafer took first at 126 pounds and Ryder Sawyer was a winner at 175 pounds.

The Sutherlin girls took sixth in the Harrisburg All Girls tournament on Saturday. Lilian Anderson had a second place finish at 235 pounds to lead Sutherlin’s seven girls that placed at the event.

Douglas senior Sialafua Polamalu earned an individual title with a win by fall in the 190 pound bracket. She pinned her oppoonent in 4:33. The Trojans finished 15th in the team standings.

The Oakland wrestling team finished second in the Howell Invitational in Monroe over the weekend.

Coen Egner won the 175 pound title with a win by fall in just 53 seconds. Aurianna Vanhouten reached the 120 pound final, but was pinned in 1 minute, 25 seconds to finish second. Camas Valley’s Kaden Williams pinned Vanhouten to win the individual title. He led the way for the Hornets, who finished ninth in the team standings.

Riddle finished 13th in the team standings.
