Riverhawks sweep Linn-Benton to stay atop South Region standings

WINCHESTER — The Umpqua Community College basketball teams remain in the hunt for a South Region title after a pair of wins against Linn-Benton on Wednesday.

The No. 1-ranked Umpqua women improved to 18-0 on the season with an 85-54 win over Linn-Benton. The Riverhawks built a 12-point lead in the first quarter and put the game away by out-scoring the Roadrunners 22-9 in the final period.

Brooklyn Fely had a triple-double to lead the Riverhawks. The sophomore finished with a game-high 31 points, 22 rebounds and 10 assists. Rebekah Beltran added 24 points and Male’ata Polamalu contributed 14.

The UCC women remained tied with Lane for first place in the South Region standings. Both teams are undefeated on the year and will meet for the first time this season on Jan. 29.

The No. 10-ranked Umpqua men followed with a 93-76 win over the Roadrunners. UCC made six 3-point shots and converted on 61% of its shots in the first half to build a 54-35 advantage at the break.

Mikey Lloyd scored 23 of his game-high 32 points in the first half. Bowen Davies had his 12th double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He tied his season-high with seven blocked shots.

Former Roseburg High School standout Mykah Mendoza had 14 points for LBCC. He made his sixth start as a freshman and played a team-high 33 minutes.

The Umpqua men and women will visit Portland on Saturday.
