REDMOND — The Umpqua Valley Christian volleyball team finished the 2024 season with a fifth place trophy at the Class 1A state tournament on Saturday at Ridgeview High School. The Monarchs lost to St. Paul in four sets in the third place match. Set scores were 25-19, 25-12, 26-28, 25-17. UVC earned a fifth place trophy for a second consecutive season.
UVC sophomore Meagan Hellenthal represented the Monarchs on the all-tournament second team.
Cross Country state meet
The Oregon School Activities Association held the state cross country meet for all classifications on Saturday at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Roseburg’s Sylvia Eckman finished 21st in the Class 6A girls state meet. The senior gained six spots over the final kilometer of the race for her best finish in three appearances at state. Eckman earned third team all-state honors.
Roseburg’s Joseph Latham knocked 46 seconds off his time from last year’s state meet and finished 74th in the overall standings of the Class 6A boys state meet.
Glide’s Noah Eichenbush led the Wildcats in the Class 3A boys state meet. He finished 22nd in the individual standings. The Wildcats finished 12th as a team.
Glide freshman Halle Goodman finished 40th in her first run at the Class 3A/2A/1A state meet.
The Glendale boys team finished 11th as a squad in the Class 2A/1A boys state meet, led by senior Levi Cullett who ran a personal best and placed 5th in the overall standings.
Football state playoffs
The high school football playoffs kicked off on Friday last week.
The No. 2-seed Oakland Oakers are moving on after a dominating 44-0 win against Nestucca on Friday at Eddy Field. The Oakers will host Myrtle Point/Pacific at Sutherlin High School in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Sutherlin Bulldogs saw their season come to an end with a 35-0 loss at home against North Valley in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. The South Umpqua Lancers also exited in the first round after a 56-14 loss at Vale on Saturday.
The Camas Valley Hornets lost 75-24 at Cove in the Class 1A 8-man playoffs on Friday. Days Creek was eliminated from the Class 1A 6-man playoffs with a 51-13 loss at South Wasco County on Saturday.
The North Douglas football team had a first round bye in the Class 1A 8-man playoffs. The Warriors will begin the postseason in the quarterfinals against Dufur at Sutherlin High School on Saturday. Dufur defeated Powder Valley 62-14 in the first round on Saturday.
