Docs sweep Klamath Falls, clinch second place and state tournament berth

KLAMATH FALLS — It was all settled, even before the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s had stepped between the lines for their final Area 4 doubleheader of the summer on Monday at Kiger Stadium.

A Eugene win over Medford about 30 minutes prior to first pitch of Game 1 between Roseburg and Klamath Falls meant the Docs had clinched a second place finish in Area 4 and claimed the automatic state tournament berth that went along with it.

Roseburg (23-16-1, 14-6 Area 4) then proceeded to sweep the Falcons 5-4 and 8-2 to finish the regular season on a three-game winning streak.

The Docs jumped on Klamath Falls (10-27, 4-15) early in both games, but had to battle into extra innings to pick up the win in the opener.

Cal Robbins and Brevin Harrison gave the Docs a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout for Robbins and a solo home run for Harrison.

Harrison started the game for Roseburg and retired the first eight batters before giving up a dinky infield single to the nine hitter Ryan Douglas in the third.

Klamath Falls broke through for a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run from Mark Carpenter, but Roseburg stretched the lead back out with a pair of runs on a two-out double by Robbins in the fifth.

Things went sideways for Harrison in the sixth. The right-hander gave up three consecutive hits to begin the frame and all three batters would eventually score to tie the game at 4-4.

In extra innings, Robbins had his second double of the game and notched his fourth RBI to give the Docs a 5-4 advantage. Tristan Ledbetter earned the win in relief allowing just one hit and no runs to Klamath Falls over the final 3 1/3 innings.

Paxton Burke, Brooks Avery and Logan Anderson all joined Robbins with multiple hits in the game and Roseburg finished with five extra base hits.

It was a 4-0 lead for Roseburg after one inning in the nightcap and the Stewies held a comfortable advantage throughout the contest.

Colton Siewell allowed just one unearned run and four hits over the first five innings. He struckout four and walked none to earn the win. Burke took over in the sixth and finished the game in a non-save situation.

Daniel Withers was 4-for-4 with two runs scored in the cleanup spot. Ty Hellenthal and Logan Anderson both contributed 2 RBIs from the bottom of the order.

Roseburg will have four days off from competition before starting the state tournament on Saturday at Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene. The Docs won’t know their opponent until after the play-in round on Friday.
