Roseburg’s Ty Hellenthal nearly went the distance and managed to keep the Mid-Valley Southpaws in check during a 3-2 non-league victory for Dr. Stewart’s on Sunday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.

Hellenthal pitched 8 1/3 innings in a scheduled nine inning contest and limited the effectiveness of eight hits by the Southpaws. He finished with four strikeouts and one walk while earning his fourth win of the season.

Mid-Valley (19-11-3) jumped out to a 1-0 win in the second inning. Thomas Byler hit a one-out triple to the right field wall and scored on a single by Andrew Yost.

The Southpaws held that lead through the first three innings thanks to a sharp outing by Yost on the mound. The right-hander was perfect for three innings before giving way to Zach Lyon in the fourth.

That’s when Roseburg (21-16-1) finally broke through. The Docs took a 3-1 lead with a two-out rally in the home half of the fourth inning.

Cal Robbins, Brevin Harrison and Daniel Withers hit back-to-back-to-back singles, with Withers’ base hit driving in the game-tying run. Tauj Flora followed with a two-run double that gave Roseburg the lead.

That was enough for Hellenthal, who managed to strand Mid-Valley runners in scoring position in multiple innings. The Southpaws scratched out a run in the seventh inning after a leadoff walk, but the game-tying run was left standing at second base.

Cole Collins took over for Hellenthal with one out and a runner on base in the ninth inning. Collins got a strikeout, then walked Mason Linton to put a second runner aboard, but closed the door and got the save with a fly out to right field.

The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s will finish the regular season with an Area 4 doubleheader on Monday at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls. The Docs and Falcons face off at 5 p.m.
