Docs split a pair of one-run games against Redmond

REDMOND — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s American Legion baseball team rebounded from a sluggish start to earn a split in an Area 4 doubleheader against the Redmond SunWest Generals on Monday at the Jaqua Sports Complex.

Roseburg (17-15-1, 9-5 Area 4) struggled to get the offense going in a 4-3 loss to begin the twin bill, but woke up in time to play solid defense behind a complete-game performance from Brevin Harrison in a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

“I thought it was an interesting day,” Roseburg coach Eric Savage said. “We came out flat in Game 1 and let them stick around and they did what they needed to do to get some runs across and we were scrapping, trying to get runs and shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times.”

Redmond’s Griffin Sanchez kept the Docs off-balance in the opener. The right hander allowed just five hits with one walk and four strikeouts over his seven-inning outing.

The Docs trailed 4-3 going to the seventh inning and threatened to tie the game with runners at second and third with only one out. Sanchez finished the game with back-to-back punchouts.

Caden Illingworth and Logan Macy both drove in runs for the Generals off of Docs starter Drew Camp, who suffered his first loss of the season.

The nightcap turned out to be a pitchers’ duel between Roseburg’s Brevin Harrison and Redmond’s Brody Fischer.

Harrison retired the first eight batters and got plenty of support from the defense behind him to pick up his first win of the summer. He scattered eight hits over seven scoreless innings with no walks and one strikeout.

“Brevin was fantastic today and was fantastic on Sunday. It was a good week for Brevin,” Savage said. “We wanted to go to our closer there in the seventh, but we felt he deserved that inning.”

The defense came through multiple times, leaving five Redmond (19-8, 6-8) runners stranded in scoring position. Harrison said the support made life easier on the mound.

“There were some plays that could have been hits and there were some that could have even drove in runs, but the defense would just dive for it and make plays. It made me super happy,” Harrison said.

The Docs scored the only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Cal Robbins in the fourth inning. It was all that was needed but Roseburg had a multitude of opportunities to score, leaving 16 runners on base.

Paxton Burke had three hits in Game 2 and Jake Johnson was 2-for-3. Brooks Avery had a single in the fourth to extend his season-high hitting streak to 10 games.

Dr. Stewart’s will host the Redmond Generals in another league doubleheader at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.
