Southpaws cutdown Docs 4-1 in Father’s Day Tournament
The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s were unable to keep up with the Mid-Valley Southpaws in a 4-1 loss at the Father’s Day Tournament on Saturday morning at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.
Mid-Valley (3-2) starting pitcher Bryant Starr kept the Docs off-balance stranding four runners on base through four innings. Three of those runners were stuck in scoring position.
Starr got the win after 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Roseburg (4-4) managed just four hits in the contest. The Docs scored their lone run on a fielder’s choice in the seventh inning. Ty Hellenthal earned the RBI, plating Dane St. Clair after he got hit by a pitch to start the inning.
The Southpaws scored a run in the first inning off of Docs’ starter Evan Corbin. Cam Johnson, Corbin’s teammate at Umpqua Community College during the spring, drove in Aiden Metzker with a two-out double to give Mid-Valley a 1-0 lead.
Johnson drove in another run in the third as the Southpaws took a 2-0 advantage. Brett Babbitt and Mason Linton drove in runs in the fifth to give Mid-Valley a 4-0 edge.
Corbin allowed four runs, only two earned, on five hits over six innings. He finished with five strikeouts, two walks and three hit batters.
The Docs committed four errors, mostly mis-throws committed while rain was falling in the early going of the contest.
Roseburg is 1-1 in the tournament and will face Corvallis at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
