Docs drop first road test 6-0 at Medford

MEDFORD — The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s were unable to capitalize on seven hits in a 6-2 nonleague loss to the Medford Mustangs on Wednesday at Jim McAbee Field at North Medford High School.

The Docs and ‘Stangs both finished the day with seven hits, but a pair of errors, a couple of wild pitches and other miscues cut short Roseburg’s chances at adding runs to the scoreboard.

Medford (6-2-1) grabbed an early lead after Freeman Rountree started the first inning with a single. The shortstop then stole second base, advanced to third on a flyout to center field and scored on a passed ball to give Medford a 1-0 advantage.

Roseburg starter Tristan Ledbetter was touched up for two more hits and another run in the first inning. Ledbetter surrendered two runs in the second inning on a run-scoring double by Triston Wallace, who later scored on a wild pitch.

The Mustangs were held scoreless by Ledbetter over the next three innings. The Douglas High School graduate took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

Roseburg (2-3) notched a run in the second inning thanks to three consecutive singles by Daniel Withers, Evan Martin and Brevin Harrison, but the inning was cut short when Logan Anderson grounded into a double-play.

The Docs had another scoring chance derailed by a double-play from the Medford infield in the fourth. A runner caught stealing in the fifth likely cost Roseburg a run when Cole Collins later hit a double.

Roseburg saw the game come to an end when Brooks Avery hit a double to left field that plated Collins, but was then thrown out at third base while trying to leg out a triple.

Withers was a bright spot at the plate for the Docs, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Rountree was 3-for-4 for Medford with an RBI and three runs scored. Wallace had two RBI’s and was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Jake Lewis got the win, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Cole Stofflet earned the save after pitching the final two innings of the game.

Roseburg returns home for the remainder of the week. The Docs host Eugene for a league game on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then host a six-team tournament for Father’s Day weekend starting on Friday.
