Docs split doubleheader with reigning state champ Portland Barbers

The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s and Portland Barbers shared victory in a non-league doubleheader on Sunday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.

Portland, the 2023 AAA state champion, scored a pair of runs in the late innings to take a 3-1 victory in the opener. The Docs returned the favor in the nightcap, pulling away late for a 5-2 win.

The Barbers broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth and seventh innings against Roseburg reliever Tristan Ledbetter. Cole Katayama-Stall, Ryan Shandy and Zach Jaeger all had two hits for Portland (3-2).

Ledbetter took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits over two innings. Cam Hartsell started the game for Roseburg (2-1) and pitched five innings, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Docs scored one unearned run against Barbers’ starter Logan Robinson, a member of the Umpqua Riverhawks baseball team during the spring.

“That first game felt like we were just one hit away from taking the lead, but that just happens sometimes,” Docs shortstop Brooks Avery said.

Ty Hellenthal made his debut for the Docs in Game 2 and pitched six solid innings to keep the Barbers at bay and get the win. The Class 2A/1A Player of the Year allowed just two runs on five hits, while walking and striking out a pair.

“They’re a really good club,” Hellenthal said. “They can all swing the bats 1-9. But it was good to see our defense step up today and hopefully I was locating alright.”

Avery went 2-for-2 in the game with a pair of singles that drove in three runs for the Stewies. Avery finished the day with three hits between both games.

“It’s always good to get a split if you lose the first game. I think as a team we did well in both games, but I think in the second game we came together more as a team,” Avery said.

Brevin Harrison pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the save.

The Docs host the Eugene Challengers on Monday to begin Area 4 league play. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Champion Car Wash Field.
