Riverhawks sweep Clackamas on late-game heroics

OREGON CITY — The Umpqua Riverhawks baseball team picked up a pair of South Region wins over Clackamas on Thursday thanks to some timely hitting in the ninth inning.

Umpqua (28-11, 20-10 South Region) beat the Cougars 1-0 in the opener of their twin bill. Shawn Hunt broke a scoreless tie with a two-out double in the top of the ninth that drove in Grafton Stroup, who ledoff the inning with a single. Logan Robinson threw a complete-game two-hitter to earn the win. He finished with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The Riverhawks needed two runs in the top of the ninth to pull off a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Clackamas (10-26, 6-23) retook the lead 4-3 in the eighth inning and was within one out from stealing Game 2. UCC’s Adam Harris hit a two-out double in the ninth to drive in a pair of runs and give the Riverhawks the lead.

Landen Parker earned the win, finishing the game by stranding the game-tying run at second base. Parker pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

The Riverhawks now have a three-game lead for second place with six games left to play. Up next, UCC hosts Clackamas for a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
