Grants Pass freshman quiets Roseburg’s bats in 7-0 shutout

GRANTS PASS — Freshman Bayden Morris was lights out against the Roseburg High School baseball team in a Southwest Conference game on Tuesday at Grants Pass High School.

Morris threw a complete-game one-hitter in a 7-0 win for the Cavemen. Grants Pass took the season series over Roseburg and held on to second place in the SWC standings.

“I thought (Morris) threw very well. He was very effective,” Roseburg coach Troy Thompson said.

The underclassman faced one over the minimum in the seven-inning contest. Morris struck out three and walked one.

Jake Johnson had the lone hit for Roseburg (11-9, 7-5 SWC), a single to lead off the second inning. Johnson was doubled-off after Brevin Harrison hit a laser line drive at Luke Morgan. The Grants Pass third baseman was able to throw to first base as Johnson scrambled to tag up.

While Morris was sharp on the mound, the Grants Pass defense provided plenty of help. The Indians put the ball in play for 18 of the 21 outs, but just couldn’t manage to find any open grass.

“We had several balls that were hit hard that they made nice plays on,” Thompson said. “Those were some good swings, and unfortunately they didn’t get down and create some baserunners and give us an opportunity to score.”

Camden Hartsell took the loss for Roseburg. The senior allowed five runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two, walked two and hit two batters.

The Cavemen provided plenty of offensive support for Morris. Grants Pass (8-7, 8-3) had six of its nine batters record at least one hit.

Cole Carnes was 2-for-2 with an RBI double that got the scoring started in the first inning. Troy Osborne, the reigning SWC Player of the Year, hit two solo home runs. Jace McGowan drove in a run and went 3-for-4.

Roseburg continues conference play next Tuesday against South Medford at Bill Gray Legion Field at Champion Car Wash Field. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
