UVC baseball drops two more at Coach Bob Invitational in Arizona
CHANDLER, AZ — The Umpqua Valley Christian baseball team saw another tough day on the field Tuesday, dropping a pair of games on Day 2 of the Coach Bob Invitational at Mountain Pointe High School.
The Monarchs went without a hit in a 6-0 loss to Arapahoe, Colo. and couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 10-4 loss to Prospect Ridge, Colo.
Arapahoe’s Kellan Dreiling held the Monarchs hitless into the seventh inning and Josh Lew secured the no-hitter by inducing a line-drive double play to end the game.
Umpqua Valley Christian (2-4) did get five walks against Dreiling, including three in the second inning to load the bases. The Monarchs were unable to capitalize on the situation.
Dreiling, a Clark College commit, finished the day with 10 strikeouts.
Kevin and Ryan Shaver threw for UVC and pitched out of some tough situations, coach Dave York said. The duo gave up three runs each.
Kevin Shaver took the loss allowing six hits and three walks while striking out three. Ryan Shaver gave up five hits with two walks and a punch out.
UVC was more competitive in its second game of the day, notching six hits in the loss to Prospect Ridge, but the game unraveled thanks to five errors by the Monarchs.
Prospect Ridge scored seven unearned runs against Ty Hellenthal and Tygue Barron. Hellenthal took the loss after giving up three earned runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking three.
The Miners jumped on UVC for three runs in the first inning and York said the team struggled to catch up.
Daniel Withers was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Monarchs. Kevin Shaver also had a double and two hits in the game. Ty Haynes drove in a run and was 1-for-3 with a triple.
Umpqua Valley Christian is scheduled to finish its spring break trip to Arizona on Wednesday against fellow Oregon team Grant Union/Prairie City/Monument. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
