A seven-run third inning propelled the Roseburg High School baseball team to a 10-1 win over South Eugene on Tuesday in the Southwest Conference opener for both programs.

Brooks Avery and Dane St. Clair both had multiple hits to support Jake Johnson, who pitched five innings to earn his first win of the season.

“To come away with a win is certainly what we had hoped and practiced for and worked for, so it was nice to come out and see those pieces fall into place for us today,” Roseburg coach Troy Thompson said.

Johnson scattered four hits through his outing, allowing one run while striking out four and walking one.

“I was pleased with how our pitchers were today,” Thompson said. “They stayed in the zone.”

South Eugene (1-2, 0-1 SWC) notched its only run of the game in the third inning. Back-to-back singles by Landon Lea and Tavo Santiago got the Axe on the board and tied the game at 1-1.

Roseburg (2-2, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as South Eugene starter Matt LeDoux struggled to settle into the game. St. Clair reached on a two-out single and advanced around the diamond thanks to a passed ball, balk and wild pitch.

The Indians regained the lead in the bottom of the third as LeDoux’s struggles continued. The senior issued four walks in the frame to compound giving up a leadoff triple to Avery and a RBI single to St. Clair.

Brayton Loomis and Avery both had doubles in the fifth to help the Indians add two more runs for a 10-1 advantage.

Avery finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs. St. Claire was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Paxton Burke also drove in three runs for the Tribe.

“I thought we were patient at the plate today and we also had some extra base hits. It was good to see us offensively come to life a little bit there,” Thompson said.

The defense also played well for Roseburg. The Indians turned two inning-ending double plays.

Roseburg continues SWC play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Grants Pass. Game 1 begins at noon.
