Roseburg’s Brevin Harrison tossed a complete-game and the Indians came up with a number of clutch hits to earn a 4-1 win over Ida B. Wells in a nonleague game Thursday at Bill Gray Legion Stadium at Champion Car Wash Field.

Brevin Harrison

The win was the first of the season for Roseburg. Wells, ranked ninth in the preseason OSAA Class 6A coaches poll, was playing its first game of the year.

Harrison allowed one hit in the first inning and then allowed only one base runner over the next five frames. The senior allowed three hits total over seven innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts.

It was one his longest pitching performances ever, Harrison said. The right-hander threw 106 pitches and faced 25 batters.

“Physically my arm felt pretty good, but mentally I was anxious,” Harrison said about taking the mound in the seventh.

He said he was in a rush to get the game over quickly. The Guardians got the first four hitters on base and broke the shutout, but Harrison realized halfway through the inning “my team had my back and I just needed to let them be them.”

With faith in his defense, Harrison got back to attacking the strike zone and finished the game with back-to-back punchouts.

Roseburg (1-1) supported Harrison’s efforts with two runs in the fourth inning. Amos Bowers recorded the first hit for the Indians. Kaden Austin served as a courtesy runner for Bowers and scored on a two out single by Brooks Avery to put RHS ahead 1-0.

Avery scored in the same inning on a double to the left field corner by Paxton Burke.

Keegan Carpenter drilled a double to center field in the fifth to plate another run for the Indians. It was the senior’s first hit in his first start at the varsity level.

“It felt good. Our team got the runners in place and I just tried to knock them in,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter is one of four seniors getting their first varsity experience this spring.

“It just felt great to get out there. I’ve just been waiting. Practices all winter. It felt so good,” Carpenter said.

Camden Hartsell added an insurance run with a single in the sixth inning. Hartsell and Avery led the Indians with two hits each.

The timely hitting and error-free defense were big improvements from Roseburg’s opening game loss to West Salem on Tuesday.

“Game 1 jitters, it’s going to happen,” Harrison said. “Those guys (Wells) are really good. They had a couple of good arms, but as we saw against West Salem, they had good arms too. I think we just got used to that and realized that this is going to be the norm.”

Wells (0-1) used three senior pitchers that all earned all-league honors as juniors. Henry Stoianoff took the loss in relief. The right-hander gave up three runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out two.

Lefty Quin Dufort, a University of Portland commit, started the game and allowed just one hit over three innings. Fellow southpaw Griffin Scott, a University of Utah commit, pitched the sixth inning allowing one run on three hits.

Roseburg heads to Lake Oswego Friday for its first road game of the season. The Indians take on the Lakers at 5 p.m.
