PORTLAND — The first day of competition at the OSAA wrestling state championship got underway on Thursday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum and it was a strong start for a decent number of local grapplers.

The overall team scores have a few local teams near the top of the standings. The Sutherlin boys (3A) and girls (4A/3A/2A/1A) are both tied for 6th in their respective divisions, while the Glide Wildcats (3A) are 9th and the Camas Valley Hornets (2A/1A) are in 4th.

There are 14 local wrestlers still on the winner’s side of the bracket and in the semifinals.

Camas Valley might have the best shot at shooting up the team standings with four wrestlers in the semis. Kaden Williams (106), David Ode (138), Owen Koegler (165) and Kaden Thompson (190) will all be aiming for individual titles on Friday.

Jaycen Marois (144) from North Douglas/Yoncalla is the only other local wrestler to reach the semifinals in the 2A/1A division.

Glide has three wrestlers in the semi finals of the Class 3A division; Elijah Hatfield (113), Caden Cox (126) and Brock Barron-Perreira (215). Tyler Waldron (138) and Ryder Sawyer (165) from Douglas are still in the winner’s bracket and so is Sutherlin’s Tauj Flora (175) and South Umpqua’s Jacob Logan (190).

Sutherlin’s Arianna Flores and Douglas’ Jessica Easterly are both in the semifinals of the 125 pound bracket in the 4A/3A/2A/1A girl’s championships. The two could meet in the championship bout on Friday.

The mats will be busy on Friday with all six classifications competing at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The large school classifications (6A and 5A) begin their matches at state. Roseburg wrestling begins its competition Friday at 8 a.m. The Indians are looking to improve on last season’s 6th place finish. Roseburg last won a wrestling state title in 2019.
