The Roseburg girls basketball team came out ready to play Thursday night in a Southwest Conference game against the South Eugene Axe at Robertson Memorial Gymnasium.

The Indians built a first half lead, but the momentum faded quickly in the second half as the Axe took control in the third quarter on the way to a 46-35 victory.

South Eugene (6-16, 2-8 SWC) nailed three 3-point field goals in the third period, turning a 20-18 halftime deficit into a 17-point lead.

The Axe outscored Roseburg (2-20, 0-10) 24-5 in the period, the one blemish on a mostly competitive evening for the Indians.

Roseburg’s Sydnee Muntifering scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the first half as the Indians managed to build a lead.

The advantage grew to as much as six points in favor of the Indians, thanks in large part to a stifling full-court press that forced a number of South Eugene turnovers.

The Axe returned the favor in the third quarter as they pressed Roseburg and forced the Tribe out of its game plan.

Roseburg rallied to within 10 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring South Eugene 10-4 in the period, but the comeback effort ran out of time.

The Tribe was 8-for-20 (40%) at the free throw line, missing opportunities to cut into the second half deficit. South Eugene finished the game 11-for-16 at the stripe.

Shaeli Sikes added seven points and eight rebounds for Roseburg.

Lila June Cadaret led South Eugene with 11 points. Freshman reserve Capri Betenson netted all eight of her points in the pivotal third quarter.

The Roseburg girls host Grants Pass at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
