EUGENE — The Roseburg boys basketball team built a big lead in a lopsided second quarter and needed every bit of it in a 70-68 win over the Churchill Lancers in a nonconference game Thursday at the Lancer Dome.

Class 6A Roseburg was tied with Class 5A Churchill after the first period, but the Indians got hot in the second quarter and pulled ahead 48-34 going to the halftime break.

The big lead proved invaluable for the Indians. Churchill (5-13 overall) quickly cut into the deficit in the second half and had a look at the game-winning basket just before the final horn.

“Going on the road and winning is tough anywhere,” Roseburg coach Jordan Humphreys said. “They’re a good team. They battled and never gave up. They probably outplayed us.”

The Lancers went on an 8-0 run to begin the fourth quarter and drew within 62-59. Churchill stayed within striking distance from there on.

Owen Bentea stopped the run with a much needed 3-point field goal near the 5 minute mark of the fourth period.

Andy McCurdy and Mykah Mendoza made a couple of tough shots in the paint to give Roseburg (12-6 overall) some breathing room at 69-61 with 2:20 left to play in the game.

Churchill responded with a 7-0 run on buckets from Jace Litten, Charlie Dexter and Cannon Mann to get back within a point with 37.6 seconds remaining. The Lancers were forced to commit multiple fouls to get Roseburg into the bonus and to the free throw line.

The Indians had chances to seal the win at the stripe, but went just 1-for-4 on attempts by Vincent Ash and McCurdy, leaving the door open for a last-second shot for the win.

Litten, who made five 3-pointers in the contest, got a look at the game-winner, but was just off the mark. The sophomore finished with a game-high 22 points.

Mendoza led four Roseburg players in double figures with 19 points. Asher Vredenburg added 15, Jullian Lopez chipped in 11 and Bentea had 12 before fouling out on an offensive charge call.

“Three years ago, the teams we had would have come out and blown that lead and never won,” Humphreys said. “There’s something to be said for the growth there, but it’s not fun to be a part of. But we’re still winning and that’s what it boils down to.”

Roseburg will continue head back to the Southwest Conference schedule on Tuesday with a visit to South Medford to begin the second half league play. The game is slated to tip off at 6:45 p.m.
