The No. 2 Umpqua women went down to the wire with No. 1-ranked Lane and handed the Titans their first loss of the season on Wednesday night at Umpqua Community College in Winchester.

The Riverhawks made up for a previous loss to the Titans in December with a 79-75 victory in front of the UCC faithful.

Umpqua took the lead for good on a lay-in by freshman Brooklyn Fely with 1:22 left to play. The Riverhawks made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 10 seconds to hold off the Titans.

Fely finished with a game-high 33 points and added 15 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Douglas High School graduate Kierra Bennett added 14 points for the Hawks.

Former Sutherlin standout Micah Wicks led the Titans with 22 points and nine rebounds.

In the men’s match-up, Umpqua was leading by four at halftime against Lane but couldn’t hang on down the stretch as the Titans rallied to win 84-76.

Leo Sewell led the Riverhawks with 19 points and Will Harris added 16.

The Riverhawks men and women will next travel to face the Clackamas Cougars on Saturday.
