The Roseburg High School boys basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end in a 79-61 home loss to the South Medford Panthers Tuesday in the Southwest Conference opener for both teams.

South Medford (7-6, 1-0 SWC) used an 8-0 run to begin the second quarter to pull ahead of the Indians and had an answer for every Roseburg comeback attempt.

“Definitely feel like it was winnable,” Roseburg coach Jordan Humphreys said. “We missed a lot of layins inside. A lot of sloppy ones that if we get those back, especially early on, then we’re going to be in a much better spot and able to put a little more pressure on them.”

Roseburg (7-4, 0-1) rallied to within 15-14 at the end of the first period, but South Medford’s run led the Panthers to a 32-23 lead at halftime.

The Indians fell behind by as much as 14 points in the third period, but kept cutting the deficit back to just single digits, only to see the Panthers respond and push the lead back to 10 or more.

The trend continued early in the fourth quarter, but South Medford put the game away at the free throw line. The Panthers went 11-for-14 at the charity stripe in the final period as Roseburg started fouling to conserve the clock.

Jackson Weiland was 10-for-10 at the free throw line and scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Panthers. He added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Freshman Carter Mills added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Mykah Mendoza scored 22 points to lead Roseburg. Jullian Lopez sank two 3-pointers and added 14 points.

The Roseburg boys will have a week off before resuming conference play at North Medford Tuesday.
