The Roseburg boys basketball team stretched its winning streak to four games with an 84-67 win over the visiting Class 5A Thurston Colts on Tuesday at Robertson Memorial Gymnasium.

The Indians had to shake off some rust after 11 days since their last contest. Head coach Jordan Humphreys said the slow start was expected, but “we played a pretty decent second half.”

“We started getting some transition buckets and Thurston just couldn’t keep up,” Humphreys said.

It was the second-highest scoring output of the season for the Indians (6-3). Mykah Mendoza led four Roseburg players in double figures with 27 points.

Owen Bentea was 7-for-10 from the 3-point line and added 21 points for Roseburg, while Asher Vredenburg and Julian Lopez contributed 14 and 11, respectively.

Roseburg was 10-for-16 from behind the arc as a team.

“We’ve slowly gotten to the type of basketball we want to play,” Humphreys said. “Guys are beginning to get an understanding of a poor shot versus a good shot.”

Nate Stiffler scored 21 points to lead three Thurston players in double figures.

The Colts (7-5) finished their nonconference schedule with the loss. Thurston begins Midwestern League play on Friday against Ashland.

Roseburg continues its nonconference slate with a road trip to Hillsboro to face the Century Jaguars on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
