The high school football state playoffs continue Saturday for three local teams playing in the semifinals.
South Umpqua, Oakland and Elkton will all try to win and keep their seasons going past Thanksgiving and into the final week of the playoffs.
For the South Umpqua Lancers, the semifinals will run through the top-seed Banks Braves in the Class 3A bracket. The 13th-seeded Lancers have pulled off some big road upsets in the first two rounds of the playoffs and will aim to get another on Saturday. Banks is undefeated and hasn’t lost a game since it was eliminated from last year’s playoffs in the semifinals.
South Umpqua and Banks kickoff Saturday at 4:30 p.m. from Cottage Grove High School.
The Oakland Oakers are the defending state champs and will face the Lowell Red Devils in the Class 2A semifinals. Both teams are 10-1 on the year after suffering a loss early in the season against top-ranked Weston-McEwen.
Lowell has the top-scoring offense (49.2 point per game) in Class 2A, while Oakland has the best scoring defense (9.3 points allowed per game). Oakland senior Jacob Chenoweth said earlier in the week that the outcome could come down to that matchup.
“Their running back is pretty good. If he gets outside then he’s a great running back. We’ve just got to contain them,” Chenoweth said. “Their offense is outstanding, but our defense is pretty dang good as well.”
The semifinal gets underway at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday from Willamette High School in Eugene. Tune in for coverage of the contest at 4:15 p.m. on i101 FM (100.7 FM or 100.9 FM) or listen online at 541radio.com.
The Elkton Elks are into the Class 1A 6-man semifinals and will face Echo at Hillsboro Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Elks got out to a slow start in the playoffs last week, but managed to pull away for a comfortable win at home. The Cougars pulled off an upset in the quarterfinals by knocking out Powers, the two-seed in the bracket. Both teams will be looking to make a football championship game for the first time in school history.
The Oregon School Activities Association provides broadcast coverage of all semifinal and championship football games. Fans can find a subscription based video broadcast of the games through the NFHS Network. A free audio-only broadcast of games can be heard on the OSAA Radio Network.
