The Roseburg High School boys lacrosse team had its hopes of reaching the Championship playoff bracket dashed by the South Eugene Axe in a 14-9 Southwest Conference loss Thursday night at Finlay Field.

The Indians got two goals each from Dominic Williams, Isaac Veale and Jacob Winn, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Axe, who took the lead on a Sayer Thomas goal with 2:40 left to play in first period and never trailed.

Roseburg (8-8, 4-4 SWC) tied the game on a goal by junior Oscar Stribling with :51.8 left to go in the first, but South Eugene (8-6, 6-2) responded with a goal by Lucas Clemons just 17 seconds later to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.

The Axe built as much as a 5-1 lead before halftime, but the Indians got hot before the break to get within 5-4. Roseburg scored three goals — two by Winn — within a 42 second stretch.

South Eugene regained a multi-goal lead and went to the break ahead 6-4. The Axe never allowed Roseburg to get closer than a two-goal deficit throughout the second half.

Clemons led the Axe with six goals and Marston Scher added three.

Roseburg will have a non-league match against Westview on Saturday at 4 p.m. to end the regular season.

The Indians will then wait to find out where they land in the final LAXNumbers rankings to see what seed they will receive in the Cacade Cup playoff bracket.
