BEAVERTON — The Roseburg High School baseball team built an early lead on mistakes by Sandy and held on for a 5-3 win on Tuesday at the Mountainside Spring Break Tournament.

The Indians took advantage of three miscues by the Pioneers in the first inning to build a 3-0 lead.

Austin Takahashi scored first on a error, then Eli Jacobs crossed home on a wild pitch. Evan Corbin put Roseburg (5-1) ahead by three runs on a passed ball.

The poor start drove Sandy starter Max Green from the game before he could finish the inning.

Jordan White doubled off of reliever Luke Kovac and drove in an insurance run in the third inning to put the Indians on top 4-0.

After the teams traded runs in the fifth, Sandy (3-3) made a run at a comeback attempt in its final at bats.

The Pioneers scored twice in the seventh inning and brought the game-winning run up to bat, but Brevin Harrison got back-to-back ground balls to get the final two outs and seal the win.

Jake Johnson picked up his first win of the season. The sophomore gave up one run on five hits through 4 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking five.

Roseburg, now ranked No. 8 in the OSAA coaches poll, will continue play in the Mountainside tournament on Wednesday against Tigard at 4 p.m.
