The high school basketball state playoffs are winding down in the Class 1A and 3A brackets and the North Douglas and Sutherlin teams are closing in on new hardware for the trophy case.
The North Douglas girls bounced back from a 37-34 quarterfinal loss against Rogue Valley Adventist Academy on Wednesday to keep their season alive with a 53-31 win against St. Paul on Thursday. Brooke McHaffie had 17 points to lead the Warriors, who led by as many as 25 points against the Buckaroos.
The North Douglas girls (25-4) will play for a fourth place trophy on Saturday against Jordan Valley (20-7). The game tips off at 8 a.m. from Baker High School. Listen to the game HERE.
The North Douglas boys are one step away from playing for a state championship after defeating Adrian 65-48 in the 1A quarterfinals on Thursday. Ray Gerard stuffed the stat sheet with 29 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. The senior had locked up a double-double by halftime.
The North Douglas boys (23-5) move on to face top seed Crane (29-1) in the semifinals on Friday at 4:15 p.m. from Baker High School. Listen to the game online HERE.
The Sutherlin girls are back in the semifinals for a third straight season after defeating Pleasant Hill 52-34 in the Class 3A quarterfinals at North Bend High School on Thursday.
Micah Wicks had a game-high 22 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. The Bulldogs had to overcome a 10-3 deficit at the end of the first quarter. Wicks scored 14 points in the second period to propel Sutherlin to outscore the Billies by 13 points for a 26-20 lead at halftime.
