The Roseburg boys basketball team started the new year much the same way it ended last year, winning.

Roseburg senior Jayce Wilder notched his first double-double to help lead the Indians past Ashland 59-51 on Monday at Robertson Memorial Gymnasium.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Tribe.

Wilder scored 14 of his career-high 17 points in a tightly contested second half, but the senior felt his biggest impact was the 11 rebounds he pulled down, another career-best mark.

“I think it changed the game,” said Wilder. “It opened up a lot of second chance points and really gave us the lead.”

Roseburg (8-2) led 21-10 after the first quater. Mykah Mendoza, who also scored 17 points for the Indians, netted seven in the opening period.

Ashland (5-6) went on a 10-0 run to begin the second quarter and had multiple chances to either tie or take the lead, but never could capitalize. Roseburg finished the first half strong to lead 31-22 at the break.

The Grizzlies again went on a run in the third quarter behind Eyera Nogues. The senior hit four 3-point shots in the period to help Ashland outscore Roseburg 23-15 and cut the deficit to 46-45 heading to the fourth.

Class 5A Ashland briefly took a 47-45 lead early in the fourth quarter and the game was tied 49-49 with 6:08 left to play. From there Roseburg clamped down on defense and finished on a 10-2 run.

Ashland was held scoreless for nearly a full five minutes of game time.

“Winning (the Holiday Hoopfest in Bend last week) gave us a lot of confidence tonight,” Wilder said. “I think we found that anybody on our team can do it. We have a lot of trust in everybody.”

“Tonight we had composure and we were able to answer with buckets and get good possessions and I think that confidence kind of helped us build for this game and going forward,” Roseburg coach Jordan Humphreys added.

Nogues led Ashland with 16 points. Izzy Golden made four 3-pointers and contributed 14 points for the Grizz.

Roseburg will continue a busy week with its second of three games on Tuesday in Springfield. The Indians face Class 5A Thurston at 6:45 p.m.
