SALEM — The Roseburg boys basketball team made 26 of 53 free throw attempts to pull ahead of the Sprague Olympians for a 73-61 win on Friday night at Sprague High School.
Mykah Mendoza was 16-for-27 at the charity stripe and led Roseburg (1-0) with 20 points in the season-opening victory. Hunter Fullerton and Owen Bentea each made three 3-point shots to finish with 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Roseburg trailed Sprague (1-1) throughout the first half and most of the third quarter. The Indians finally took their first lead of the contest on a corner three by Bentea with 1:41 left in the third period.
The Tribe outscored Sprague 44-28 in the second half after trailing 33-29 at halftime.
Liam Spencer led the Olympians with 14 points and Jarod Stanley added 13. Both Spencer and Stanley fouled out of the game along with the rest of the Sprague starting lineup.
Roseburg will next visit North Eugene for a nonconference game on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
