WILSONVILLE — The executive board of the Oregon School Activities Association approved a number of items during its meeting on Monday, including the adoption of a 35-second shot clock in varsity basketball games starting next school year.

The board voted unanimously to approve the rule change, which will begin in the 2023-24 season. It comes after the National Federation of State High School Associations accepted the use of shot clocks last year.

The move is overwhelmingly accepted by coaches across the state, according to a poll done by the Oregon Basketball Coaches Association. It found that 220 coaches in Oregon favored the rule change, while 48 were against and 28 had no preference.

Oregon is among about 10 other states that are jumping on board with the shot clock. 10 states already use one. Among those joining Oregon in adopting the shot clock in the next two years are Idaho, Montana and Utah. Washington and California already use the shot clock.

The Board also voted to approve the Wrestling State Championship to be held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum February 23-25 and the Dance/Drill State Championship to be held at the Salem Pavilion on March 17th and 18th.
