SALEM — The first ever match for the Umpqua Community College women’s soccer team will go into the record books as a victory.

The Riverhawks scored a pair of first half goals and pulled away for a 6-2 win over Chemeketa on Wednesday in the first match for the newest sports program at Umpqua CC.

Sutherlin High School graduate Jaydn Vermillion scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the game to put Umpqua on top. The Storm got a goal back moments after Vermillion’s second score. Chemeketa’s Rin Choi snuck a shot past UCC goalkeeper Gabrielle Dukes near the 21 minute mark to make the first half score 2-1.

UCC’s Celeste Pearisaeff scored the first of her two second half goals at the 58th minute to put the Riverhawks ahead 3-1. Umpqua tacked on three more goals in the second half to lead by as much as 6-1.

Becca Barreau netted Chemeketa’s second goal just before the final horn.

Dukes had five saves in goal for Umpqua.

The Umpqua women will now get ready to defend their home field, which will be Sutherlin High School this season. The Riverhawks host their home opener on Saturday against Clackamas at 1 p.m.
