The Roseburg Public Schools Board of Directors is taking community input this week on whether or not the “Indians” mascot should be retired. A questionnaire can be found on the school district website.
Recent online petitions and comments from former Roseburg High School students has brought the issue back to the forefront. Previously, the Oregon Department of Education banned the use of Native American mascots, expect with the approval of a local tribe.
The school district reached an agreement with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians in 2017 to use the name “Indians” as the schools mascot.
