The ball got rolling on a list of hopeful improvements to the Fir Grove Park soccer complex on Harvard Ave. after the Roseburg City Council voted unanimously to enter negotiations with the Umpqua United Soccer Club during their scheduled meeting Monday.
The Umpqua United Soccer Club has proposed installing one or two multi-use artificial turf fields at Fir Grove Park, along with other upgrades such as improved parking, lighting and spectator seating. The organization also wants to negotiate a 20-year agreement with the city to manage the facility.
Plans are still in the initial stages and many details still need to be worked out before any final decisions can be made on actually breaking ground. One major stipulation of any project that takes place at the field would be that all financing for the project must be secured prior to beginning work.
The Umpqua United Soccer Club has spent the past year working on their proposal, according to comments made by Lance Colley that were read during the virtual council meeting. The councilors voted 8-0 to keep hope of the improvements alive, pending future negotiations.
