Most local sporting events are canceled until 2021, but virtual sports are going strong around the country. That’s good news for Umpqua Community College’s new eSports program, which will have its inaugural season this school year.
The Riverhawks announced the hiring of a head coach for the new program this week. Roseburg native RJ Mills has been selected for the position.
Mills was a wrestler for Roseburg High, but started getting into competitive gaming in college at Oregon State. He’ll lead a roster of hopefully 20 or more competitors. The Riverhawks are still recruiting for the team.
ESports is competitive video gaming and has been growing in popularity. Colleges around the country have been adding teams. UCC is planning to compete in Rocket League, League of Legends, Super Smash Bros. and possibly, FIFA, NBA 2k and Madden. Matches will begin this fall.
