The dominoes have started to tumble and a college football season in the fall is quickly crumbling.

The Pac-12 CEO Group voted unanimously to postpone all sports competitions through the end of the 2020 calendar year, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The decision followed a similar announcement from the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday morning.

All Pac-12 sports activities will be on hold until 2021, not just the high-profile football season. The decision will affect fall sports and the beginning of the winter sports seasons as well.

Student-athletes impacted by the postponement will continue to have their scholarships guaranteed, according to a release from the Pac-12. Conference officials say they are strongly encouraging the NCAA to grant students who opt out of competition this academic year an additional year of eligibility.

University of Oregon president Michael Schill said the decision to postpone all sports was “guided by science and a deep commitment to the health and welfare of student-athletes.” The conference says it will consider a return to competition for impacted sports after Jan. 1, 2021 as long as conditions have improved.

With two of the Power 5 conferences now postponing their fall sports until later in the year, the focus turns to the ACC, Big-12 and SEC. Reports say that the Big-12’s decision could be the linchpin in what the other two conferences decide.
