The Northwest Athletic Conference announced Thursday that it will make changes to the fall sports season for a few select sports and has created a plan for return-to-play for its member schools, including Umpqua Community College.

The changes will affect a couple of sports for the Riverhawks. Volleyball will be moved to the spring season, while cross country will remain in the fall with practices starting as soon as Aug. 15.

Soccer has also been moved to the spring season. UCC is introducing women’s soccer at the school this year, but wasn’t planning to begin competition until the fall of 2021. According to the News-Review, the RiverHawks will stick with that timeline despite the changes by the NWAC.

The NWAC return-to-play plan takes a phased approach, slowly increasing the number of players in a practice and the amount of interaction. Other safety precautions will be in effect for athletes and coaches.
